PHX transportation: every way in and out of Sky Harbor.

The Sky Train, light rail, rideshare, taxis, rental cars and private car service - how each one works at Phoenix Sky Harbor, and which suits your trip.

Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) sits about three miles from downtown Phoenix - one of the most central big airports in the country - and it has two passenger terminals, Terminal 3 and Terminal 4. Getting out of it is easy once you know the options, and every one of them starts with the same question: how far are you going, how much luggage do you have, and how many of you are there?

Here is how each way of getting to and from PHX works, how long the drive is to the places most visitors are headed, and when a pre-booked car makes more sense than the line at the curb.

Getting out of Sky Harbor

PHX Sky Train

Terminals 3 and 4Free, runs around the clock

The airport's free automated train links Terminal 3, Terminal 4, the East Economy parking area, the Rental Car Center and the 44th Street light rail station. It is the backbone of getting around the airport itself, and the first leg of any trip by light rail or rental car.

Valley Metro light rail

44th Street and Washington stationAbout 15 min to downtown

Take the Sky Train to 44th Street, then the light rail west to downtown Phoenix or east to Tempe and Mesa. It is inexpensive and avoids traffic, and it suits light packers staying near the line. It does not reach Scottsdale, Paradise Valley or most resorts, and it does not run through the middle of the night.

Rideshare

Signposted zones at each terminalOn demand

Uber and Lyft pick up from designated rideshare areas at both terminals - follow the signs from baggage claim. Waits and prices swing with demand, and both climb sharply when several big flights land at once or an event lets out.

Taxis

Taxi stands at each terminalOn demand

Licensed taxis queue at marked stands outside each terminal. There is no booking, and the fare runs on the meter.

Rental Car Center

Off airport, by Sky TrainA few minutes by train

All the rental companies share one consolidated facility a short Sky Train ride from the terminals. Phoenix is a driving city, so a rental suits visitors planning several days of their own touring - but factor in hotel and resort parking.

Shuttles

Ground transportation areasScheduled

Scheduled shuttle services run from Sky Harbor to Tucson, Sedona and Flagstaff, and many hotels near the airport run their own courtesy shuttles. Check with your hotel and book intercity shuttles ahead.

Pre-booked car service

Curbside or inside at baggage claimWaiting when you land

A chauffeur tracks your flight, waits at the curb or inside at baggage claim with your name, handles the luggage and drives you door to door at a fixed price agreed in advance. It is the best fit for groups, families with luggage, late-night arrivals, business travel and anyone heading to Scottsdale or a resort. See PHX airport car service.

Local tip: Include your flight number when you book. The pickup then follows the flight, so an early landing or a two-hour delay changes nothing on your side.

Getting around Phoenix

Light rail and buses

Phoenix, Tempe, MesaVaries

The light rail and Valley Metro buses cover downtown Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa well. Beyond that corridor, the Valley is too spread out for transit to be practical for most visitors.

Driving and parking

Valley wideVaries

The freeway network makes driving straightforward outside rush hour. Downtown, Old Town Scottsdale and the resorts all charge for parking, and event nights fill garages fast.

A driver by the hour

Valley wideThree-hour minimum

For a day of meetings, a night out or a trip to Sedona, hiring a car and chauffeur by the hour means one vehicle stays with you between stops. See private driver hire.
